Mountain Biking
The mountain biking in Telluride is legendary with a vast amount of rocky terrain and superb views. Here are a few of our favorite trails which include rides for beginners to extreme riders.
Telluride Ski Resort - Bike where you ski and visit the Telluride Ski Resort in the summer. You'll find moderate to difficult terrain which can be accessed from the free gondola. Check out the Telluride Trail or ride the gondola up from town and then coast down for a downhill mountain bike adventure.
Black Bear Pass - This ride is great for experienced riders. Start on Red Mountain Pass and ride to Telluride. The descent into Telluride is thrilling.
Alta Lakes Trail - Easy to moderate mountain biking can be found on the Alta Lakes Trail. It is 5 miles one way with a 1,700 foot elevation gain. Visit the 1870s mining town of Alta and take in the great views during this Telluride mountain bike ride.
Deep Creek - 6.5 miles one way, Deep Creek is a great place for easy mountain biking. There is a 1,672 foot elevation gain. Also, beware that there are lots of forks and turns so bring a map or guide.
Galloping Goose Trail - A moderate, long but rewarding, trail. It is 20.6 miles one way with 1,580 foot elevation gain.
Ophir Pass - Moderate to difficult mountain biking. This trail 6 miles one way from Hwy 145 to the pass with 2,480 foot elevation gain. You'll experience great views along the way!
Bear Creek Canyon - Looking for easy to moderate mountain biking in Telluride? Check out Bear Creek Canyon. You'll start in town and ride 2 miles one way to the waterfalls. The great scenery will make up for the steep terrain as this ride climbs 1,040 feet.
Looking for a longer Telluride mountain biking adventure? Consider riding to Moab. It's 215 miles and the majority of riders take 7 days to complete the trip. You'll find intermediate terrain and this ride requires strong fitness. There are 6 huts along the way that are stocked with food. Contact San Juan Huts for more information.
