Earlier this month snow began appearing on the high peaks, reminding
us that we have only a few weeks before turning in our mountain
bikes and running shoes for our skis and snowshoes. As usual, Labor
Day weekend brought large crowds for the Telluride Film Festival,
and the movie-goers are speculating about which movie might end up
the next Brokeback Mountain, which premiered at last year’s festival.
This week everyone has been busy readying for three intense days
of the Blues and Brews festival featuring Lou Reed, Bruce Hornsby
and John Mayer and beginning today (Friday).
Already, September has been a busy month with the new Mountain School
and Montessori classrooms out at Lawson Hill opening Sept. 5th, and
on September 7th our own Jim
Lucarelli was installed as the new Telluride
Association of Realtors (TAR) President. Good luck Jim!
While much of the country experiences a weakening in the housing market,
the popularity of Telluride as a year-round resort with its festivals
and cultural activities has been driving our real estate market to new record
highs. According to Telluride consulting YTD dollar volume through
August is 7 percent ahead of last year's record numbers.
Our featured property this month is 1756 Green Meadows Lane in Telluride
Pines, a home located a short 30-minute drive from Telluride sitting
high on Hastings Mesa with breathtaking views of Mount Wilson. For more information
contact Josh
Rapaport.
As always, if we can be of any assistance in your travels to Telluride or answer
any questions about our real estate market, please don’t hesitate to contact
us.

The Telluride Watch
Published:9/1/06
By Seth Cagin
The program for the Telluride Film Festival is so rich,
year in and year out, that it can be parsed in numerous ways.
There are premieres and retrospectives; tributes and experimental
cinema; student films and the rediscovered works of forgotten
masters.
Particularly evident in this year’s program, perhaps, is the divide
between films you want to see because if you don’t see them here,
you may never have another chance to see them (the revival of Jacques
Tati’s Playtime, 1967, in a new
70 mm print, 20,000 Streets Under the Sky), and films that you want
to see here because they may well go on to great acclaim (Infamous, Fur, Volver,
Babel), and by seeing them here, you’ll have seen them first.

The Telluride Watch

Thomas Wirth
A new paradigm in philanthropy is emerging, in the opinion
of Paul Major, president of the Telluride Foundation. Without
exactly knowing that they were moving in that direction, he says,
the Telluride Foundation finds itself a member of the new movement.
“We are very much finding that what the newer and larger
foundations are doing applies to what we hope to accomplish [in
San Miguel County],” he says.
“The traditional foundation model used by some of the
great U.S. philanthropists such as Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford,
Kellogg, Lilly, etc.,” explains Major, “has been
to set aside estates into a private foundation with preservation
of the principal in perpetuity.” From these foundations,
he says, annual grant spending is approximately five percent
of foundation holdings.

Tax Increase Of $7 per $100,000 Assessed Property Value
The Telluride R-1 School Board approved a resolution Tuesday
that calls for an election for a mill levy override this November.
The override will generate an estimated $410,000 annually to
go toward augmenting salaries of teachers and support staff by “at
least seven percent,” according to Telluride R-1 School
District Superintendent Mary Rubadeau. Administrative salaries
will not be affected.
