Tax Increase Of $7 per $100,000 Assessed Property Value
The Telluride R-1 School Board approved a resolution Tuesday
that calls for an election for a mill levy override this November.
The override will generate an estimated $410,000 annually to
go toward augmenting salaries of teachers and support staff by “at
least seven percent,” according to Telluride R-1 School
District Superintendent Mary Rubadeau. Administrative salaries
will not be affected.
The mill levy will lead to a tax increase of approximately $7
per $100,000 assessed property value, so that the owner of a
$600,000 property would, for example, incur a tax increase of
$42 annually.
The State of Colorado provides minimal cost-of-living increases
each year for public education, with an additional one percent
from Amendment 23. “These annual increases do not keep pace
with the cost of living in our mountain-resort community,” Rubadeau
said in an Aug. 29 press release. Because “Telluride has
one of the highest performing districts in the State of Colorado,” she
added, “the district is looking to the future, with the mill
levy override, with the goal of retaining and recruiting highly
qualified educators and support staff.”
