Cold weather and a number of storms in early December have given everything a nice white cover. A snow storm arrived last night and has continued through the day. Lift 5 Terrain opened last Tuesday and Lift 6 opened Friday. Additional terrain off of Lift 4 and Lift 1 is open as well, including the Misty Maiden Pocket Park.

With the holidays fast approaching, the community calendar is chock full of events, particularly the last week in December. Last Wednesday's Noel Night, an all day holiday shopping extravaganza, and Telluride's official tree lighting ceremony kicked things off. Over the weekend the Telluride Dance Academy performed the Nutcracker Holiday at the Palm Theatre with ballerina Valerie Madonia, formerly of the Joffrey Ballet. Last weekend was also the Real Estate Affiliates holiday party where we bid farewell to Sierra who is moving to Milwaukee. We will miss her dearly and wish her the very best!

Looking beyond the valley, Telluride has made the national news recently with an article in Ski Magazine and a profile of Mountain Village hotels (The Peaks and Inn at Lost Creek) in the December Harper's Hideaway.

Locally, new hotels and other potential development in the Mountain Village have been dominating the real estate news. We've included a Telluride Watch article on the hotel building boom in this newsletter and a smaller, but equally important piece on the Medical Center's new executive director. Should you want to see any of the other recent articles, please feel free to give us a call or email and we'd be happy to forward you a copy.

Finally, 744 Wapiti is our Featured Property of the month. This 3-bedroom, 3-bath log home is set on a large 1.4 acre lot in the Telluride Ski Ranches, just minutes from the Mountain Village and the Town of Telluride. For more information, contact Jim Lucarelli.

As always, please feel free to drop by the office and say hello when you're in town.

Happy Holidays!

Hotel Building Boom Set to Take Off in Mountain Village »

Published 11/18/05

By Peter Kentworthy

The "critical mass" that Mountain Village developers and real estate brokers have long prophesied may be upon us. As much as one million square feet of new hotel and condo-hotel development is slated to come on line in Mountain Village over the next two to five years.

The building boom consists of a potential six large projects, including one that is nearly complete, totaling at least 500 new accommodation units, replete with attendant amenities.   The project that is nearly complete is See Forever Village, consisting of high-end condominiums that will be managed by The Peaks. Developer Robert Levine has said he will break ground within weeks on a long-debated, $200 million hotel-condominium project on Lots 50/51 in the Mountain Village Center, which will be operated by St. Regis Hotels. The boutique condominium hotel, Lumière, broke ground last week. Also starting the Mountain Village approvals process are two more large luxury hotels and a large mid-range hotel.

What's more, the new corporate owner of The Peaks, the Blackstone Group, has indicated it will make an investment reported to be in the tens of millions of dollars in refurbishing the property.

What accounts for the long-awaited boom in so-called "hot beds" changing at last from hot air to hot news? Is it an accident that the Mountain Village construction pipeline is suddenly crowded with new hotel and hotel-type projects?

Local developer John Horn admits that part of the explanation might be just that.

"It's funny how it works in real estate development," he says. "It's a confluence of individual circumstances, coincidence as much as anything."

Telluride Medical Center Hires Permanent Executive Director »

Published 11/18/05

It's official. The Telluride Hospital District has hired a new executive director for the Telluride Medical Center.

Gary Hughes, who currently is program manager for the University of California San Francisco Center of Excellence for Breast Cancer Care, starts work December 15. Hughes has over twenty years of experience in the healthcare field, with everything from management to operations to research positions.

"We received more than 60 resumes," Telluride Medical Center Interim Director Diane Brown said, after the board's announcement. "Gary Hughes is an excellent choice. "He will be an excellent fit."

Hughes received his undergraduate training and master's degree in special education, and his doctoral degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado. At the Center of Excellence, Hughes has been responsible for the overall leadership and administration, which has entailed strategic planning, staffing and financial control. His prior job experience includes providing support and analysis of managed-care contract performance of corporate clients for a national managed-care company; working as an associate research professor and director in Research and Evaluation at the University of Alaska, in Anchorage, and as hospital administrator for Providence Seward Medical Center in Seward, Alaska.

At Seward, Hughes was in charge of a rural primary care center that provided both emergency and hospital services. He directed the construction of a new facility, established a primary care practice, and recruited physician staff; retrained and upgraded staff skills; developed an active community board; designed and implemented community service programs; and led the development of local communication, education and marketing programs.

Hughes was born and raised in Colorado Springs; he and his wife, Carolyn, have traveled frequently to the Telluride area in recent years to visit family. They are thrilled to be moving back to Colorado.
