Covering less than a square mile, the Town of Telluride is nestled into a box canyon of unsurpassed beauty and surrounded on three sides by US Forest Service lands. Like many ski towns in Colorado, Telluride was built by fortune-seeking gold miners of the 1850's. During its boom years in the later 1800's & early 1900's, Telluride was home to a healthy mix of wealthy businessmen and hard-working miners.

The mining explosion did not, however, last forever and in the 1950’s Telluride began to see its town shrink by the hundreds as the mines shut down. Despite this the history of Telluride and its role in the American West did not go unnoticed and in 1964 Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District.

The town went through years of hard times after the mining industry left, but in 1972 Telluride experienced the beginning of its next gold rush, "white gold" that is. Outdoor enthusiasts and wealthy transplants began to flock to this amazing canyon in the San Juan Mountains to once again appreciate what the land had to offer. Since the day the first chair lift opened up at the Telluride Ski Resort, the region has not looked back. Music festivals have bloomed in the summer months and the skiing and winter sports continue to attract visitors from across the globe.

With two waterfalls visible from main street, and many more in the surrounding mountains, the panoramic landscape inspires eveyone who sees this magical place. Visitors are drawn not just by its natural beauty, but by this National Historic District’s surprisingly cosmopolitan lifestyle.
