November
has come in like a lamb, but that hasn’t slowed preparations for
ski season. Last Friday the upper parts of the mountain received six
inches of wet snow, ideal for base-building, and KOTO held its annual
Ski Swap. Temperatures permitting, the ski area is busy making snow
to connect the upper parts of the mountain with lifts and access trails
and we received a bit more snow Monday night. The ski area is scheduled
to open November 23rd with Donation Day, a benefit for the Telluride
Ski & Snowboard Club. On this day everyone pays $24 to ski or snowboard
and proceeds go to the Ski & Snowboard Club. November 24th is the
official opening day and all passes are valid.
With the
November elections behind us, Telluride elected a Town Council filled
with incumbents and voted for an expanded municipal water system, Mountain
Village approved the Family Adventure Sports Facility and San Miguel
County voters chose to "de-Bruce," or relax TABOR restrictions
on county spending. Please see the story below for
more information.
For those
of you still planning a winter visit, getting to Telluride is easier
than ever with non-stop jet service from seven cities including Chicago,
Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark and Phoenix, but we have
heard that the popular flights are filling up fast. For a more detailed
flight schedule see the story below.
Finally,
Artisan’s Hideaway is our Featured Property of
the month. A classic Telluride home, it was built in 1897 and lightly
remodeled in 1997. The property has great potential for a full remodel
as it offers 1 1⁄2 lots in a great neighborhood. Earlier this
month the price was reduced from $1,750,000 to $1,475,000. For more
information, contact Jim
Lucarelli.
As always, please feel free to drop by the office and say hello when
you're in town. We hope to see you soon!

Election 2005: Year of the Incumbent In
Council Election » |
 |
|
The
Telluride Watch
Published:11/4/05
By Seth Cagin
In the past two municipal elections, Telluride voters chose
change, defeating incumbents running for reelection and electing
challengers who were sharply critical of the way council was
doing business. This year the pendulum stopped swinging.
The
three incumbent members of the Telluride Town Council who were
running for new terms all won on Tuesday. Stu Fraser, Andrea
Benda and Mallory Dimmitt will be joined the next time council
convenes by Jill Masters, a longtime Telluride resident making
her first bid for public office, who campaigned like an incumbent
by telling voters that if elected, she would help stay the course
with respect to current town policy on major issues.
In
addition to choosing a majority of the Telluride Town Council,
Telluride voters handily approved bonding for a new municipal
water system in Bridal Veil Basin and narrowly rejected an initiated
ordinance that would have directed the Telluride Marshal’s
Department to give the enforcement of marijuana laws with respect
to adult possession its lowest priority.
Voters
in the Mountain Village Metro District gave strong support to
bonding for a proposed $18 million Family Adventure Sports Facility.
In the Telluride R-1 School District election, board president
Jenny Patterson was returned to office for another term, joined
by Margaret Cruzzavala.
"I’m
so pleased that the town supports what its council has been
doing," said Fraser, who took the most votes in the council
election, with 408. "The results are a positive affirmation
of what we’ve been doing for the past two years."
"We
have a very dynamic and constructive team and that’s what
we need for the challenges that face our community," said
Benda. "I encourage everyone to keep us on our toes."
Mayor
John Pryor, though his name was not on the ballot, could not
help but see the election returns as an indication of support
for his administration.
"I’m
extremely pleased with the election results," Pryor said.
"Our voters can clearly see the benefit of a government
that works together collaboratively. It was refreshing to have
such a civil and constructive election process. There was really
no negative advertising or campaigning. I’m very proud
of our community."

| Luxury Hotel Tapped for Mountain Village » |
 |
|
The Daily Planet
Published:11/11/05
By Matt Beaudin
What
is now a dirt parking lot in Mountain Village will be getting
a bit of a makeover, as a luxury St. Regis Hotel is soon to go
up in the Village Core.
The
land on which the hotel will be built - Lots 50-51- has been an
area of contention in Mountain Village, but is scheduled to sell
to the New York-based RAL Development Services on Tuesday for
nearly $7 million.
Construction
on the hotel is slated to begin shortly after the closing, said
Robert Levine, President and CEO of the company.
Levine's
company also owns the Inn at Lost Creek, another upper-tier hotel
in the Mountain Village. "We've been involved with Telluride
for over 15 years," he said. "We're hoping to break
ground in the next couple of weeks."
The
hotel is expected to open in the winter of 2007.
Levine
said that the construction budget for the hotel is near $200 million.
In comparison, The Peaks, when it was built in the early 1990s,
cost about $100 million to build, Mountain Village Town Manager
Kathy Mahoney said.
"We're
excited about finally bringing a true flagship property to Telluride,"
Levine said.
St.
Regis has luxury hotels in such markets as New York, Aspen, San
Francisco, Rome, London, China and will soon add another ski resort
town - Deer Valley, Utah - to its portfolio.
St.
Regis' parent company, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, controls Sheraton,
Westin and W Hotels, among others.
The
Mountain Village has been working with Levine since 2002, but
bumps in the design process have stalled development. Levine said
he has been working on the idea for the past six years.
The
project will provide 100 hotel rooms and 42 condominiums, eight
of which will be deed restricted. The property will also feature
an ice-skating rink.
"We've
worked very hard to bring who we thought would be the absolute
premier operator for this property because of the unusual cost
and the unusual location," Levine said.
The
fact that the hotel was to be a St. Regis was formally announced
at Tuesday's Mountain Village Town Council meeting, where a team
from the St. Regis gave the council a brief presentation on the
line of hotels and resorts, which appeared to impress most of
the room.
"We're
thrilled," Mahoney said. "St. Regis is a great operator."
The
building will also bring 202 parking spaces to the Mountain Village
core area, 122 of which will belong to the Mountain Village Metropolitan
District. The Mountain Village will manage the parking facility.
The
hotel, Levine said, will bring an international name to the Telluride
area, and will be the flagship hotel in the region. The Mountain
Village Town Council wanted to be assured of that fact, and will
require the hotel to maintain a minimum quality rating of four
stars. Should the rating fall below that, the St. Regis will be
forced to pay the Mountain Village $25,000 for each month it is
out of compliance.
Mahoney
said a valet service will be provided, but that the Metropolitan
District would discuss standards with St. Regis before the opening.
Levine
said the hotel could provide as many as 200 jobs.
"It's
really been long awaited," he said. "We're hoping that
it's going to raise Telluride to another level."
